Why two pads

On a phone the fastest way to tap is not one finger going up and down, it's two thumbs alternating. One-thumb taps top out around 6 or 7 a second for most people. Two thumbs in rhythm get to 10, 12, sometimes 14. So the test pad is split in half, and each half counts on its own.

The result shows how many taps came from each side and how balanced they were. 50 / 50 with a high cadence score means the two thumbs were taking proper turns. 70 / 30 means one thumb was doing the work and the other was along for the ride.

Getting a clean number

Turn the phone sideways if the pads feel cramped; they stack on narrow screens and sit side by side on wide ones.
Tap with the pad of the thumb, not the nail. Screens miss nail taps.
If the count seems low, check the phone's accessibility settings: some "touch accommodation" options ignore rapid taps on purpose.
Pick 10 seconds to compare with anyone else; 5 seconds if you just want the burst.

Works on a desktop too

With a mouse each pad is just a click target, which makes this a quick left-hand versus right-hand test if you have two mice, or a two-player counter if you don't. Tally mode has no timer and an Undo button for counting things instead of speed.
